About
A Family on Mission
The mission of any church that takes the Bible and a relationship with Christ seriously should be the same. After all, it is a mission given to us by Christ Himself in Matthew 28: 19-20:
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you…
Our mission, very simply, is to make disciples. A disciple of Jesus is someone who follows Him, who seeks to follow His example, and to live by His standards. God’s mission for us is to share with people who are far from Him how to know Him and once they do, to train and encourage them to become more like Him.
Vision
The Love of Christ
compels us to SHARE with others how to KNOW and FOLLOW Jesus and to CELEBRATE the difference He can make in the life of a person and a family.
At Gate City, We are building up our members to be:
- Biblically Grounded Learners who have a relationship with God rooted in His written Word and are growing closer to Him through it.
- Prayerfully Focused Followers who intentionally engage with the Lord through regular prayer as they follow Him by faith.
- Meaningfully Related Members who actively participate in our church family, allowing us to rely on one another.
- Gospel-Centered Sharers who are motivated by what Christ has done for them and feel compelled to share that message with others.
- As we KNOW Jesus by being a Biblically Grounded Learner
- We will FOLLOW Jesus as a Prayerfully Focused Follower
- And CELEBRATE Jesus together as a Meaningfully Related Member
- So we can SHARE Jesus as a Gospel-Centered Sharer
Beliefs
As a church body,
we subscribe to the doctrinal statement of the Southern Baptist Convention, "The Baptist Faith and Message."
We believe that the Bible was written by men who were divinely inspired. We believe it to be infallible and inerrant in the original autographs. We maintain that it has God as its author, salvation as its end, truth for its matter and that it makes clear the standards by which God will judge us. We further believe that it is the objective standard of truth by which our personal and collective behavior, creeds, and religious beliefs should be tried.
We believe that there is one true and living God. We believe Him to be the Creator, Sustainer, and Ruler of the universe. We believe God is infinitely holy and infinitely powerful. He is revealed to us as one God in three distinct persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The persons of the Trinity each maintain personal attributes, but there is no difference in nature, essence, or being.
We believe man to have been created by God in a state of sinless perfection. He was made as a volitional being, capable of expressing his own will. In response to the temptation of Satan, he chose to disobey God. Sin then came into the world, affecting not only Adam and Eve but all successive generations and the created order itself.
We believe that salvation occurs solely by a response to the completed work of Jesus. We maintain that salvation comes by an expression of faith in the death and resurrection of Christ and a commitment to then follow Jesus as Lord in conjunction with repentance or turning from sin. Salvation is not achieved through any personal deeds or effort and only occurs at the invitation of the Spirit of God.
We believe that all true followers of Christ endure to the end. Those who trust Christ as Savior do not merely become His follower, they are brought into His family and are thus made children of God. We maintain that sin in the life of God’s children disrupts fellowship between them and their Heavenly Father, but it does not bring about their removal from His family.
The Bible teaches that Jesus experienced a literal bodily resurrection from the dead. After His resurrection, He appeared to the disciples and many others before His ascension to heaven. He now exists in His resurrected body at the right hand of God the Father. We believe that there will be a resurrection one day of all those who are saved and those who are lost and that those found to be in Christ will have a body that conforms to that of Jesus’.
The New Testament makes plain that Jesus will personally and visibly return to the Earth. The timing of that return is known to no one, and it is the duty of all believers to live in a state of readiness for His return. This means that we are to seize every opportunity to share with others the hope that can only be found in Jesus.
We believe that the government should not seek to establish a mandated religion and should provide the Church with the protection and freedom to pursue its God-given mandates. We believe civil government to be ordained by God and that it is the duty of Christians to obey all laws not contrary to the Word of God. The Church should not resort to civil powers or government entities to carry out its mission. We believe that the state has no right to impose penalties for the expression of religious convictions.
We believe that living as followers of Jesus will prompt us to avoid greed and selfishness. In its place, we are to possess not simply a compassion for those who are in need but actively and intentionally seek within our means to meet the need. Just as Jesus met physical needs in order to then meet spiritual needs, we believe it to be our personal and collective responsibility to meet the physical and spiritual needs of others.
We believe that as a local body of Christ, we are autonomous and with God’s help self-sustaining. Though we believe that to be true, we further believe that we are part of a universal body of Christ, the universal church, and are therefore not islands unto ourselves. As such, there are associations and conventions of churches that our local body may seek to voluntarily align. Such organizations will have no authority over our local fellowship, but help us through cooperation to advance the goals of Christ’s kingdom.
It is the duty of every Christian to share the truth of the Gospel with others. Though salvation is deeply personal it is not private and it is the expressed will of God that all who follow Him share Him with others so that the Gospel might spread throughout the world.
We believe God to be the source of all blessings, material and spiritual. We further believe that God has called His followers to support the work and ministry of the local church. This involves giving of our time, effort, and the money He has entrusted to our care. God delights in the giving of His people when done willingly and cheerfully.
God created humans in His image as either male or female. Part of the plan of God was that a man and a woman would be able to experience sexual intimacy within the confines of marriage. Sexual activity outside the commitment of marriage is forbidden by God and viewed by Him as sin. This includes fornication, adultery, and homosexuality. Marriage is an institution created by God and is to be experienced only between a man and a woman, and His expectation is that this is a life-long commitment. God’s plan is for the marriage and the family which naturally comes from it to be both the building block of society and of the church.
